Description
Heat-treated pallets are wooden pallets heated in a kiln until the inner core reaches at least 56°C (132.8°F) for 30 minutes. This process kills all bugs, larvae, and fungi. It stops invasive species from spreading between countries during shipping.
The Heat-Treatment Process
- Heating: Pallets go into a large industrial kiln or oven.
- Temperature: The center of the wood must hit 56°C (132.8°F).
- Time: The wood stays hot for at least 30 straight minutes.
- Testing: Workers use special temperature probes inside the wood to track the heat
Why They Are Used
- Global Rules: They meet ISPM 15 rules for international shipping.
- Eco-Friendly: Heat safely cleans the wood without using toxic chemicals.
- Stamp of Approval: Finished pallets get an HT stamp so customs officers know they are safe.
